Going Forward; Europe or not
A season full of ups and downs, master classes and disaster classes, (as experienced by all) has been the fate of Frank lampard's men. With fans always ready to give out their displeasures, be it a Lampard's tact or a player performance. It hasn't been a rosy season for the blues, not even close.
Having to bear the departure of the one-time winner of the PFA and fwa awards, Eden hazard in the summer window, facing a transfer ban and having a relatively thin squad. Pundits and sports journalist alike were quick to write Chelsea off with only a meagre few giving them any chance.
These predictions and analysis did look on track when United trashed Chelsea 4-0 in the first game of the season. Results which placed UTD amongst title contenders and Chelsea, well even if for week or so, amongst the bottom three.
Fast-forward to months after, the displeasures haven't stopped coming(they never stop) but lampard's men have indeed given all that predicted against them a good run for their money.
Highlighting Issues;
Season-long, the problems have been visible with some deciding against going away.
The most talked about; the defence and how easy they concede goals. As much as many are quick to pick out a player and rain blames on him, be it Kepa, Rudigier or Alonso, It should be said that such doesn't solve the problems.
Firstly, defending is a part of the game which every player (exempting only one or two) should partake in.
Thus in situations where all the defending is left for the defenders there is such to be problems.
in trying to look critically, certain questions like; Do the forwards make attempts to win the ball after losing it, do the midfield provide enough cover or is the defence not just good enough (maybe due to multiple errors) should be asked.
Creating chances; although not very visible Chelsea do not have standout creators in their ranks. Thus the chance creation is spread out for all of them. Good tact but then an elite creator is needed to pick out those runs, give killer passes and all of that sort. A creative game-changer. The likes of Mount and willian have been impressive too in creating chances if I may add.
Converting chances; Chelsea have been rather poor in converting the big chances they create only managing to score about 1/3 of it.
Goalkeeping aspect; Kepa has come under heavy criticisms this season due to his performances. Without mincing words they've been poor and it's been visible to all.
Although he hardly makes errors leading to goals but then in other aspects he's at ground level. Low amounts of saves completed coupled with low confidence levels. Over time he's been dropped, all to get him back in top form but till now such measures have been in vain.
Defined roles;
Through the season we've seen Chelsea's midfield three or four play in different shapes. Rotations are always good provided the results do come plus with the injuries and thin squad, you can't really blame lampard for rotating.
lastly it hasn't been easy for lampard having to take over a team which was already in transition towards Sarriball and getting them to play his style which I feel is almost similar.
Suggestions;
A GK should be sought (priority)
Chelsea's defence is in need of reinforcements. Asides getting a top centre half, a left back is also needed.
With both Kante and Jorginho's futures looking uncertain, getting a defensive midfielder will be a good purchase.
- in all their transfers and plans I.e of the board, it should all be in line with lampard's ideas. You don't want to buy players which will become headaches to the Coach and in his quest to please the office men, fail to get the team playing like he wants them to.
So the board should allow Lampard make his decisions as regards who he wants and whose services aren't very much needed again.
In the end with the likes of Ziyech and Werner already signed and Havertz closer than ever, fans and lovers of the game alike will be biting their fingers in anxiety.
We all want to watch these men play together.
Nice article. Chelsea are in transition and this season and definitely punched above their weights. Nonetheless, moving forward, they have to strengthen in the areas mentioned if they have to bridge the gap between them and the likes of City and Liverpool.
ReplyDeleteInasmuch as Chelsea did well to sneak into the UCL, its worthy to note that they didn't really have a near good season!
ReplyDeleteThey were aided by the gross inconsistency of other top teams , even though Lampard did manageably well, I think even with all their big purchases, they'll still have a tough ride next season!
Having to play the Conte style, turn 90° for Sarriball and now , another totally different system! I think the head coach needs time.
Chelsea really outdid themselves and we would've been in wonderland to expect more. But as you pointed;slight tweaks are needed all through the squad and you did sublimely well highlighting them! Nice piece bro
